Fight for the Future

Hey John,

In yet another example of the dangers of facial recognition, news recently broke of a 61-year-old man who was sexually assaulted in jail after being wrongfully arrested thanks to a false facial recognition match.1

Everyone should be worried about facial recognition tech because anyone can be caught up in a false facial recognition match. In December, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued an order banning pharmacy chain Rite Aid from using facial recognition tech for five years. The FTC had received several complaints about false facial recognition matches and subsequent harassment at Rite Aid stores, including that of an 11-year-old girl.2,3

For years, we’ve campaigned against the use of this creepy and intrusive technology because we’ve long understood it as a threat to people’s basic human rights.4 That the FTC came down hard on facial recognition shows that our campaign has been working. But new reports of false facial recognition matches, like that of the 61-year-old man, demonstrate that we still have a lot to do. Will you chip in today to support our newly relaunched Ban Facial Recognition campaign?
