Jack, there have been a lot of grim stories about the state of news organizations in the past month. It really boils down to the fact that in January over 500 journalists were laid off.
Daily Kos has survived because you, Jack, and tens of other readers and activists donating what they can to fuel our work. That's why I am asking for your help: Can you donate $5 or more to Daily Kos today?

For decades, too many news outlets relied on Big Tech like Facebook and Google to drive traffic to their sites and in turn, drive advertising revenue. However, those Big Tech companies changed their algorithms driving fewer and fewer people to news sites and advertising revenue suffered. It gets worse, companies like Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Google have taken an ever-growing share of this coveted revenue stream. On top of that, many businesses are spending less of their budgets on advertising—leading to decreased demand and pricing.
It has become almost impossible for news organizations to survive on advertising revenue. Cuts need to be made in order to survive, unfortunately, so many news outlets rely on people to drive their work—writers, editors—so when news outlets can't make ends meet, layoffs are oftentimes the only option.
Daily Kos is no different. Our largest expense is payroll for the people that make Daily Kos what it is—our staff of writers, editors, campaign organizers, tech developers, election analysts, and administrative support—all the people putting in the hard work to create progressive change.
Daily Kos hasn't been able to rely solely on advertising revenue for many years. Our largest source of income is grassroots donations from our readers and activists. That makes us accountable to you, Jack. Please support Daily Kos and our work with a donation of $5 or more.
