The urgency of the current moment is not lost on anyone. Congress must move quickly to pass a substantial COVID-19 relief bill, and we know that every hour counts.

But, John, the details matter. When Congress makes a decision about how to spend trillions of taxpayer dollars, we need to make sure we get it right.

The Senate is currently debating how best to support the American people and businesses during this economic crisis before moving a bill that my colleagues and I can vote on in the House.

I support my colleagues in the Senate who are prioritizing relief for American workers and their families right now. Aside from combating this virus, the most important thing we can do in Congress today is to provide immediate financial assistance to the countless families who are struggling to pay their bills.

We understand that we can’t let entire industries fail on our watch and that sometimes a bailout is what’s needed. But if we’re going to spend billions of taxpayer dollars to prop up major corporations, that needs to come with some strings attached. We cannot give blank checks to huge corporations and ignore average Americans who are struggling to make ends meet.
