If you haven’t met them before, I’d like to introduce you to my parents — Adam and Jane Stein. I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for them. They showed me that I could make a difference in our community.

Growing up, my parents taught me and my siblings to do what was right, even if it wasn’t easy. And they lived by that principle themselves.

My mom was always extremely active in our community, working hard to make it better. My father was a civil rights lawyer who helped found North Carolina’s first integrated law firm. Dad and his partners did not back down from doing what was right, not even when someone firebombed their office and burned it to the ground.

Instead, they continued to fight and win landmark cases that helped to desegregate our public schools and protect employees from discrimination. They knew that some things are just worth fighting for — no matter the cost.

Now, extremist Republicans are trying to drag us backward once again. They hurl baseless insults and attacks at us because they’d rather fight culture wars than do the real work of governing — but I’m not giving up. Just like my mom and dad, I know that the fight to protect reproductive freedom, public schools, and our democracy is worth it.

I’ve already taken on tough fights as Attorney General and delivered, and I’m ready to do so again as North Carolina’s next Governor. But John, I need your help.
