This Black History Month, I’m reflecting on the leaders who came before me and paved the way for progress. No one quite bears that torch like my great-great-grandfather Robert Smalls.

As a ship pilot, he put his life on the line steering himself and several other enslaved Black Americans to freedom during the Civil War. He later came back and served as a representative here in South Carolina – the same seat I’m running to represent.

I’m committed to carrying on my great-great grandfather’s legacy of action – both in the Lowcountry and in Washington. But right now, shamefully, there are too many Republicans who want to use my great-great grandfather’s courageousness for their political gain.

I won’t stand for it because the simple fact is, you can’t honor Robert Smalls with empty words and dismember his legacy at the same time. From rolling back voting rights to attempting to erase Black history in schools, our very democracy is at stake.

We won’t be able to keep up this critical fight for justice unless we take back our Democratic House majority, but I can’t do it without your support.
