Meet Rep. Christina Haswood (D-KS)

"The Navajo Nation had one of the highest mortality rates of a tribal nation experiencing COVID, and I have personally lost family members during that time as well," said Rep. Christina Haswood. 

From relying on public resources as a child to running for public office during the COVID-19 pandemic to growing a following of nearly 150k on TikTok, Rep. Haswood embodies the hope and possibility that happens when young people come together for the common good.

Innovation Fellows

30 Gen Z and millennial lawmakers will dive deep on the skills of futures thinking, bipartisan coalition building, and effective legislating. Meet the fellows. 

The fellowship kicked off with a Futures Thinking Forum – a dedicated time for the Innovation Fellows to come together across divides and learn about strategic thinking and foresight.

On the Rise 

Young legislators across the country have been busy in their state Future Caucus chapters – introducing legislation, announcing new leadership, and discussing their policy priorities. 

Over the last few weeks, the Future Caucus team visited our chapters in Vermont, Mississippi, Georgia, and Indiana.

Fresh off their Cherisse Eatmon Collective Impact Award win, the Vermont Future Caucus held a series of back-to-session events this month. One outcome of those events: a criminal justice reform bill endorsed by a bipartisan group of 15 Future Caucus legislators. 

Mississippi Future Caucus co-chairs Rep. Jeramey Anderson (pictured above) and Rep. Shane Barnett led a bootcamp for young lawmakers to sharpen their leadership and policymaking skills.

Rep. Dr. Jasmine Clark and Rep. Steven Sainz hosted the majority of young Georgia lawmakers for a kickoff meeting to plan their legislative agenda for the year. Top of mind is artificial intelligence and workforce development.

New leadership took the reins of the Indiana Future Caucus. Welcome Rep. Beau Baird and Rep. Maureen Bauer!

Nursing their noodles and dumplings, Vermont legislators talked about where they agree on criminal justice reform.

“We were able to open up to each other and talk on a friendship level instead of just on the floor. It opened up a world of possibilities.” (Podcast)

A group of bipartisan Mississippi lawmakers have been focused on the state’s declining population and addressing the state’s brain drain.

“I am not one of those people that is going to pretend like it is not an election year, and that there will not be things that we will not agree on,” said Clark. “But I do think there are definitely places where lawmakers can get together, sit in a room, and talk about and work on policy that we can all get behind.”

Sen. Calatayud (R-FL) built a 103-page bill on affordable housing and met with every single member of the Senate until it had unanimous support. 

Young legislators in Colorado took a unique approach to pass legislation aimed at reducing court involvement for young children.
