Black History Month is more than a history lesson. It's a time to celebrate the impact Black Americans have had on our country. It's also a time to remember our country's dark history and recommit to the fight for equality and justice for every American.

Colorado's own Elvin R. Caldwell was a trailblazer and community leader who helped tackle discrimination across our state when he became the first African American elected to serve on a city council west of the Mississippi River. And there's Gloria Tanner, the first African American woman to serve in the Colorado Senate and championed civil rights her entire life. Thanks to heroes like them, our country has made great strides for racial justice.

But today, regressive policies and MAGA extremism are putting our progress in danger. From passing anti-abortion legislation, rolling back voting rights, and even passing bills that environmentally harm Black communities — there are those doing their best to hinder the growth of our nation.

We must continue fighting for justice and equality for all to build a better future for every American.

I remain committed to dismantling the systems of inequality and fighting back against oppressive legislation. Today, I hope you will commit to joining me in the fight for equality and justice. We can all do our part by supporting local Black-owned businesses, donating to organizations fighting for racial justice, and continuing to demand accountability.
