John,
We have big news about our runoff election. After Gov. Abbott declared a state of emergency, he changed the date of our runoff election in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
Our election has now been moved to July 14th.
This changes the race but we are still in it for the long haul! Our campaign will focus on supporting the Texas 10 community and local efforts to care for each other. We started this last weekend by raising funds for a food pantry in rural Brenham, Texas.
We all need to work together to get through this crisis.
We are also in the fight for universal vote-by-mail. Last week our campaign made news by joining with Texas Rep. Sheryl Cole to demand universal access to vote by mail in the upcoming election. We argued that a provision of the Election Code allows every citizen to qualify for a mail-in ballot — to protect our personal health and the health of all Texans. Using our legal theory, the Texas Democratic Party filed suit on Friday against the State of Texas. If they win, everyone in Texas will be able to safely vote from home — and slow the spread.
We will be giving more updates about the work we are doing and amplifying organizations that need our help. This campaign has always been about the people — now we are working hard to keep our community strong and healthy.
Fighting for you,
Mike Siegel
