This month, we commemorate Black History Month. Also known as African American History Month, the month-long recognition has been designated during the month of February by every U.S. President, dating back to 1976.

Friend, Black History Month is dedicated to both remembering the rich history and making a pledge to never stop learning about the contributions of Black Americans since before our nation’s founding. But Black history is not just in the past — it is always being written.

At a time when Black History is being politicized and used as a political weapon from the right, I stand in support of teaching the truth about racism in America — past and present.

Friend, we can’t understand history when we refuse to listen honestly to Black struggle and triumph. I am committed to standing up against those who think such important history is nothing but a political ploy.

So this February, I ask that we all take time to honor Black History Month — an annual celebration of the achievements by Black Americans and a time to celebrate their role in our country’s history.
