Dear John,

As we individually take measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our communities, the virus has shown us how much we depend on each other — immigrants and native-born New Yorkers alike — to survive and thrive. Whether it’s the people still going to work — cooking and delivering our take-out orders, deep-cleaning our offices and homes, or taking care of our elderly family members — we need every New Yorker to be safe and healthy. If we leave even one person behind, we risk leaving everyone behind.

That’s why we launched our “New York United ([link removed]) ” advocacy campaign, to fight on the Federal, state and local levels to ensure that COVID-19 response efforts are also protecting immigrant communities. Among other demands, this campaign will push for the suspension of ICE raids and enforcement; ensuring that immigrants are included in the relief programs; free COVID-19 testing and treatment for all New Yorkers regardless of status; guaranteed eligibility for immigrant businesses and workers for paid sick leave and cash assistance and more.
But we need your help to protect immigrant New Yorkers standing on the frontlines of the pandemic.
Take Action to support immigrant New Yorkers now. ([link removed])

In this uncertain time, many immigrant New Yorkers will lean on the local community organizations that they trust and rely on for information and services. But many of these groups are facing just as dire a threat. Many are struggling with protecting the safety of their staff, and how to close their doors and work remotely given the extreme needs of our communities. They have limited financial reserves to enable them to weather changes in the funding climate. If this situation holds, New York’s immigrant communities — and the nonprofits that serve them — will bear the brunt of the damage to the state’s health, economy, and community.
Today, we are launching the #NYunited Fund to provide broad, emergency financial support to organizations on the frontlines of this pandemic.
Can you join us by making a contribution, today? ([link removed])

While the particulars of the COVID-19 pandemic are unprecedented, this is not the first time New Yorkers have rallied together, in the midst of a great crisis, to support and uplift our most vulnerable. Only by standing united and working together can we ensure our own wellbeing through this outbreak and rewrite the rules to ensure better health for us all for generations to come.

In Community,

Steve Choi
Executive Director of the NYIC
