Dear Friend,
Thanks to you, FAMM’s growth and impact have exceeded anything I could have imagined when I started the group in 1991. It is incredible to know that our work has helped lead to fairer sentences for more than a half million people.
When I stepped down as president in 2017, it was natural for Kevin Ring to transition to the role. But when Kevin left last summer, I worried about finding someone who could meet the high bar that he set. Incredibly, we have found that person!
I am so excited to announce that Moses Cook has been selected to take the helm as our new president, and he starts today, February 5! He will step into the role that has been filled by Interim President Roxana Rincones since Kevin’s departure in June 2023.
Moses’ wealth of experience aligns perfectly with FAMM’s work. His lifetime of compassion for those who bump up against the criminal justice system means his heart is fully engaged with our mission and our members.
Moses has been a legal educator who has dedicated his career to training others to become lifelong advocates for justice. His two decades-plus of leadership experience in criminal justice reform includes positions at Rising for Justice, DC Justice Lab (formerly DC Law Students in Court), The George Washington University School of Law, and Georgetown University Law Center’s E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship Program.
As Moses said during one of our many conversations, “I firmly believe that our work at FAMM is exceptionally critical in the current landscape of criminal justice reform in the United States. To me, FAMM's advocacy is not just about altering policies, it's about transforming lives and shaping a criminal justice system that reflects the values of accountability, dignity, and fairness. As FAMM has always done, I look forward to sharing stories from our members as well as insights illustrating the real impact of excessive sentences on individuals, families, and communities.”
Moses has the full and enthusiastic support of the FAMM board, and I know that FAMM members will also wholeheartedly support him as he tackles sentencing policies with new ideas and fresh energy.
Please join me in welcoming Moses to the team, and feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] [[email protected]] if you have any questions or thoughts you would like to share as we move forward with this new leadership.
My very best,
Julie Stewart
