Marginal Nation: Bestselling Authors New Novel Warns of Grim Future for Japan Born in 1957 in Iwate Prefecture. Completed graduate studies at Keio University. Published his first novel, an international conspiracy thriller, in 1996, while still working for a major US company. After it became a bestseller, he quit to become a full-time writer. INTERVIEWER In many rural areas of Japan, people aged 65 and over make up more than half the population. As society ages and depopulation advances, whole communities have become unsustainable. The phenomenon is known as genkai shūraku, or “marginal villages,” in Japanese. But the title of your new book—Genkai kokka, the “Marginal Nation”—suggests that the crisis is not limited to rural regions. How do you see the future for Japan?
