The Equality Legal Action Fund is hiring a full time legal counsel to develop a docket of cases with local counsel in partner states to combat disinformation, harassment and defamation against LGBTQ community members and allies!

Position: Legal Counsel, Equality Legal Action Fund ([link removed])

Starting Salary Range: $90,000-$100,000 DOE

Supervision: This position reports to the President

Classification: Full-time, exempt

Location: Remote

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:
We are attorneys and advocates who are dedicated to fighting extremism and disinformation against educators, public officials, election officials, and members of the LGBTQ community. We were founded as a state-based organization in 2022 and are now expanding nationally. No American deserves to be the target of disinformation, defamation, harassment, and intimidation based on who they are and love.

We will use all the legal tools at our disposal to protect Americans and expose extremists and their tactics and disinformation.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The legal counsel will develop a docket of cases across the country in partnership with local counsel to combat anti LGBTQ defamation and harassment.

POSTION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Identify, investigate, strategize, and research potential legal claims against anti LGBTQ extremists for defamation and harassment against LGBTQ community members and allies.
* Develop legal strategies and litigate cases in state or federal courts and/or support local counsel to do the same. This includes conducting factual and legal research, leading litigation teams potentially with multiple co-counsel, interviewing clients and potential witnesses, writing demand letters, drafting pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery, arguing motions, trying cases in court, handling appeals and amicus briefs, and negotiating settlements.
* Provide legal research and analysis on legislative proposals, occasionally testify on proposals and issues in front of state and local bodies.
* Collaborate closely and build relationships with state-based organizations and advocates.
* Engage in public speaking, media interviews, outreach and "know your rights" presentations, as well as writing op-eds, newsletter articles, and reports as needed or assigned.
* Provide technical support to community stakeholders and partners.
* Work with the President of the organization to develop goals and support fundraising development.


QUALIFICATIONS:
* 2-5 years of legal experience with preference to applicants who have civil litigation experience
* J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
* Licensed to practice law in a state within the United States
* Excellent research, writing, analytic and presentation skills
* Demonstrated ability to independently investigate, research, and develop issues for litigation
* Experience analyzing complex issues and concisely communicating them to a variety of audiences
* Experience managing highly collaborative and complex projects or initiatives
* Strong commitment to working collaboratively and effectively with colleagues in organizing, policy, legal and communications to achieve shared goals
* Ability to cultivate relationships with ideologically diverse stakeholders
* Ability to keep organized in a fast-paced environment, to manage several projects simultaneously, and to adjust to frequently changing demands
