Friend,
It’s no secret that the Latinx community has been the target of online disinformation campaigns for years. From misleading ads on Facebook to conspiracy theory threads circulating on WhatsApp, dangerous anti-immigrant narratives have been inflamed by exploitative actors targeting our community — all for political gain.
As Latinx voters have become a demographic that can sway elections, we see the weaponization of disinformation to prevent Latinx communities from exercising their right to vote or learning the truth about anti-immigrant candidates.
We’re intervening by better engaging Latinx audiences and showing up in the spaces where they already are — like Twitch! Our Digital Director, Rodrigo, even joined a stream last week to talk about the work UWDA is doing to combat disinformation online and target key audiences ahead of November’s elections!
But it’s going to take a team effort to root out harmful disinformation and overcome the bad actors who seek to spread false, divisive narratives about immigrants and tear our communities apart.
