John,

The waters around the tiny Pacific island of Niue are a place of magic.
Humpback whales swim here every year to give birth. Pods of spinner
dolphins play in the shallows. One reef even has the densest population of
grey reef sharks on earth.

But tides of plastic waste, rampant illegal fishing and warming waters
risk turning swathes of this teeming ocean into barren dead zones. So the
islanders have come up with a radical plan to protect everything they
love. And we can help.

Every $148 sponsors and protects one square kilometre of ocean for 20
years – and if we all chip in now, we could raise enough to help them
kickstart their dream of creating an ocean sanctuary the size of Vietnam.

They can get started right away on pollution clean-ups, boat patrols,
buying the surveillance equipment they need and, piece by piece, creating
a giant marine sanctuary.

Can you chip in to buy and protect this ocean?

For over 1,000 years, the people of Niue have lived in harmony with the
vast ocean around them, passing knowledge of its secrets from parent to
child, generation to generation. Now, they are stepping up to defend it.

Niue has already declared all its territorial waters a marine park and
demarcated massive no-fish zones. But its area of ocean is the size of
Vietnam – and the island has less than 2,000 people! It needs more
resources to make this work in practice.

That’s why the visionary trust set up to conserve Niue’s natural heritage
is asking for help from people like us – so that they can put the
surveillance systems, expert teams and long-term strategies in place to
make sure each pocket of precious ocean is fiercely protected, day by day,
year by year. And they can empower village communities to protect and
sustainably manage their food security too.

John, this is an opportunity to be part of an extraordinary
story, helping a tiny population turn the tide against the forces
decimating their home. And it’s a huge deal for the planet, too,
preserving vital breeding grounds for humpback whales and hundreds of
other species. Can you chip in today?
