John, I was the first Muslim woman elected to office in North Carolina history. Yes, all of North Carolina history.
Being the “first” of something is a rewarding feeling, and I hope other Muslim women see me and think they can serve in public office too.
But the truth is, it isn’t always easy. In fact, it’s really difficult, and I am often the target of bigots in our state.
Just last month, the Lieutenant Governor’s Chief of Staff made racist and Islamophobic comments toward me. I was sickened by his comments, but I will never let bigotry stop me from standing up for those who have been left behind by government.
I’m going to keep fighting for all North Carolinians, and show young Muslim girls all across the country that they too have a place in government. But I can’t defeat the status quo – or its deep-pocketed donors – on my own.
If you’re with me in this fight, I need YOU to step up: Can you give $27 to my reelection campaign so I can keep fighting for a brighter future and push back against these Islamophobic attacks? >>
Thanks for standing with me,
Nida Allam
