If you love the old pastime of bird watching, there’s some terrible news… bird populations are actually decreasing because of climate change.
Some of these birds could be local to your neighborhood. In the past 50 years, the Canyon Wren is down by 23%, the Bobolink is down by 20%, and the American Crow, the American Goldfinch, and the Common Grackle are all down by 12%.
In total, that’s a staggering loss of more than 3 billion birds - or nearly 30% of the population in just half a century. It’s a huge problem for our environment.

First , birds are a bellwether and can be a sign of broader ecological problems, such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change. Monitoring their population helps us better understand the health of our natural environment.
Second , birds have a positive impact on the environment. They pollinate wildflowers, disperse plant seeds, and eat pesty insects like bark beetles and weevils. Without birds, there will not be balance in our ecosystems.
