MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS March 17 - March 23, 2020 THE WEEK IN BRIEF Click Here to Watch The Missile Defense Mondays Video On Wednesday, Raytheon announced that the first antenna array designed for the U.S. Army’s Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) passed initial testing. The array will now be mounted on an enclosure for integration to be used at a testing range with real-world targets such as air traffic from Boston’s Logan International Airport. On Thursday, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned the first Maya-class Aegis destroyer, named the JS Maya (DDG-179). The destroyer is equipped with Aegis Baseline 7 and is able to launch the SM-3 Block IIA being jointly developed with the United States. Also on Thursday, the Missile Defense Agency monitored and got tracking data during the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy’s first test of a Common-Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB). MDA plans to use this information and data from the experiment as part of its development of systems to defend against adversary hypersonic missiles. Also on Thursday, the USS Shiloh (CG 67) launched a Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) during a live fire exercise in the Philippine Sea. The USS Shiloh is currently forward deployed in the Indo-Pacific region as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. On Saturday, North Korea test launched two of its new KN-25 short-range ballistic missiles. The missiles were launched from North Pyongan and travelled around 410 km, with a 50 km apogee, across the country before landing in the Sea of Japan. The KCNA statement on the test referred to new ‘strategic weapon’ systems, some still in development, that will help form a ‘radical change in the national defense strategy.’ Click here to read all of the headlines from the week. Learn more about STSS MISSILE DEFENDER OF THE WEEK Lieutenant Colonel Craig Cotner LTC Cotner was born in Winamac, Indiana. He received his commission through ROTC as an Air Defense Artillery (PATRIOT) officer from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2003, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds Masters of Arts in Leadership Development from the University of Texas at El Paso (2008) and a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College (2014). LTC Cotner’s previous assignments include Platoon Leader, Tactical Director, and Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Fire Control Officer, 3-43 ADA BN (Fort Bliss, Texas); Battery Commander of Bravo Battery, 3-6 ADA BN (Fort Bliss, Texas); Battery Commander of A-4 ADA THAAD (Fort Bliss, Texas); Military Evaluation Officer, Army Evaluation Center (Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland); Military Advisor, Regional Support Command – South (Kandahar, Afghanistan); Air Defense Artillery Fire Control Officer, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command (Kaiserslautern, Germany); Battalion Executive Officer, 5-7 ADA BN (Baumholder, Germany); USNORTHCOM Ballistic Missile Defense Current Operations Branch Chief (Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado); and is currently assigned as the USMTM Deputy Chief of the Air and Missile Division (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). LTC Cotner has deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; Qatar from 2006-2008 and Afghanistan in 2012. LTC Cotner has attended the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic Course, PATRIOT Top Gun Course, Air Defense Artillery Fire Control Officer Course, Air Defense Artillery Officer Advanced Course, Naval College of Command and Staff, and the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense System Missile Defense Officer Course. LTC Cotner has been married to the former Danielle Mowad of El Paso, Texas since August 2006. LTC Cotner’s awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation (1 OLC), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Basic Parachutist Badge, and the Army Basic Space Badge.
