Last month, a beloved wild horse from the Big Summit Wild Horse Territory in the Ochoco National Forest was brutally shot and killed. According to the United States Forest Service, the black horse was shot twice in the gut. This horrific killing sent shockwaves through the local community and we immediately offered a $5,000 reward for any information that led to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator(s).

Jack, this is not an isolated incident. Since 2022, at least 59 wild horses and burros have tragically and violently lost their lives at the hands of humans who have shot them.

Since then, AWHC has pledged $30,000 in reward funds to incentivize individuals with information to come forward, but to date, none of the perpetrators have been convicted for these heinous killings.

But there’s more we can do. Take action now to call for a dedicated law enforcement task force to investigate this uptick in wild horse and burro slayings.

Just last year, two beloved Onaqui wild stallions were shot and killed, and in 2022, 16 wild horses were found slain by a high-power rifle on public lands. But wild horses aren’t the only targets, in July of 2022, five wild burros were found shot in California. These killings are horrific and need to be investigated by a coordinated task force dedicated to bringing justice for these incredible animals. We need your help calling for just that.
