Dear John,

At ARC, we are often asked how someone with a former felony conviction can have their record cleaned up. For us, answering this is an important part of the reentry process for formerly incarcerated individuals – a way to cement redemption and restore dignity. Obtaining freedom from incarceration is only the beginning. Restoring one’s rights and one’s place in society is what we at ARC fight for every day. ([link removed])

On Saturday, as part of these efforts to drive change, we proudly held a record expungement clinic in San Bernardino to answer that very question. At our clinic, formerly incarcerated individuals from the Inland Empire learned about a new law (SB 731) aimed at giving them a chance to expunge their records. Attendees benefited from free live scans and took part in panels focused on the process of sealing their records. We had over 150 in attendance, and registered 76 new participants. We take pride in our work to not only pass policies but to implement them as well. ([link removed]) ([link removed])

“Our presence in the community was received with a long line out the door of people excited to change their lives, and ready to listen and learn how to begin the process of expunging a felony conviction. The response from the community made me acutely aware of just how great the need is for these services all across the state of California, and I am so honored and excited to be moving forward such an important initiative.”
-Elizabeth Tuzer, ARC SB731 Legal Project Manager

[link removed] the success of Saturday’s expungement clinic, on Sunday we partnered with Los Angeles County Supervisor, Hilda Solis, for a Voter Registration and Resource Fair. The event provided individuals with the opportunity to register to vote onsite, learn about SB 731, and connect with county agencies and service providers who provided employment resources, voting information, a vaccine clinic, and COVID-19 test kits. I, along with Solis, spoke about voting rights to a crowd of ARC members and formerly incarcerated individuals from across Los Angeles. ARC was integral in the fight that restored the right to vote for formerly incarcerated individuals in California and we continue to lead voter registration efforts to ensure the voices of our communities are heard. I am happy to share that this important event received coverage from news media outlet, KTLA, helping to raise awareness about the rights of individuals with past convictions to vote and their eligibility to expunge their records.

We are grateful for the support and collaboration of Supervisor Hilda Solis and all those who contributed to making this event possible. We are also grateful for the coverage from news media outlet, KTLA, which helps raise awareness about the rights of individuals with past convictions to vote and their eligibility to expunge their records.

As you reflect on this, please consider that it is events like these coupled with supporters like you that make second chances possible. Consider donating today ([link removed]) so that more individuals can benefit from voting and opportunities like SB 731 and be able to be meaningful participants in their communities.

Sincerely,
