It’s time to safeguard the desert wilds for future generations.
The Center for Biological Diversity and allies are working to secure formal protection for more than 675,000 acres of public lands in Southern California — a historic opportunity that would significantly advance the federal goal of protecting 30% of lands and coastal waters by 2030.
Expanding Joshua Tree National Park would help link the park to other protected areas, supporting vital habitat and connectivity for animals like chuckwalla lizards, threatened Mojave desert tortoises, and iconic desert bighorn sheep.
Formal recognition of the proposed Chuckwalla National Monument, south of the park, would honor and preserve the homelands and sacred sites of local Tribes. It would also protect visitor access to cultural landscapes and popular recreation spots, including the Mecca Hills and Orocopia Mountains Wilderness.
