Missouri Shared Prayers [link removed] Devotion
By Rev. Ayanna Shivers, pastor of St. Luke’s UMC in Columbia
I Thessalonians 5:17 simply states, “pray without ceasing.” It’s nestled between “rejoice always” and “give thanks in all circumstances.”
These three words are the center of my prayer life! I am a multitasker, to say the least. Being a bi-vocational pastor, I take care of my church congregation and work at a university, where I often teach overloads. As much as I would like to, I don’t always get a chance to go to my “prayer closet.” If I am being completely transparent, my “prayer closet” would have to be somewhere in my car.
This is why praying without ceasing is an integral part of who I am. I have learned to constantly be alert to what is going on around me. Then, as I am noticing things, I stay in communication with God! Sometimes a situation warrants that I intercede in prayer: For instance, when I see an accident on the opposite side of the highway or the roads are hazardous. Other times, it might be to thank God for the marvelous works that surround or something that might seem insignificant, like giving me the strength and desire to make it through a workout at the gym!
As Christians, we should always be in a constant position of prayer — that means simply talking with God — whether giving thanks or addressing a need for others or yourself. It is how we stay connected, and it is how we please God.
