John,
February is Black History Month but in the 12th Congressional District, we recognize our Black history and our neighbors fighting for real liberation every day―honoring Black Americans who have contributed so much to our society and our world.
Now is also the time to speak up about how our country continues to deny Black people equal rights.
We must reverse centuries of disinvestment in Black communities, and root out anti-Black racism in our institutions. Otherwise, the still-expanding gap between Black and white families’ wealth and health will continue to grow.
Thanks to Black-led activism for racial justice, the concept of reparations for Black Americans has shifted into the mainstream.
I’m proud to support Rep. Cori Bush’s Reparations Now Resolution, which recognizes the federal government’s responsibility to provide reparations for enslaving people of African descent, as well as reparations for the harm our government continues to inflict on millions of Black people.
Sign now to support the Reparations Now Resolution, which will help dismantle the racist systems that have oppressed Black Americans for far too long.
After the era of slavery, our government codified anti-Black racism in other policies like Jim Crow and redlining.
These harms continue today: The wealth gap between Black and white families has expanded over the past 60 years. The gap between white and Black home ownership rates is the widest it has been in 50 years. Redlining still exists, with Black Americans disproportionately denied fair lending rates and mortgages, regardless of income.
Built into our country’s institutions, systemic anti-Black racism also leads to staggering health and education inequities, as well as the unjust over-policing and over-incarceration of Black communities.
We must reckon with and repair these outrageous injustices. As a key part of that process, our federal government has a responsibility to enact reparations for Black Americans.
Add your name to support the Reparations Now Resolution, which calls for long-overdue reparations for Black Americans.
Thank you. Together, we will keep fighting systemic racism and the ideology of white supremacy. We are building a country and a world where all people are free.
In solidarity,
Rashida
