John, EMILYs List founder and visionary Ellen Malcolm turns 77 today!Â
Few women have done more to open the doors for Democratic pro-choice women candidates in the last four decades than Ellen.
Thanks to Ellen's vision, dedication, and guts, what began in 1985 — Ellen and a group of friends writing letters and raising what they could for women candidates — has become the powerhouse organization we know today as EMILYs List.
We can't take for granted how far women in politics have come, and how fast. In 1985, no Democratic woman had ever been elected to the Senate in her own right. Only 12 Democratic women served in the House. Only eight women had ever been governors.
Year by year, election by election, Ellen Malcolm and EMILYs List helped change that by building this community and investing early and powerfully in women candidates. Today, EMILYs List is the premier resource for Democratic pro-choice women candidates at every level of government.
Our millions-strong community is fortunate to have Ellen as our founder, our first president, and our chair emerita. And we have to make certain that her life's work — to elect Democratic pro-choice women and change the face of American politics — will continue for years to come.
