Just before the new year, the Department of Justice's Executive Office of Immigration Review released guidance for all judges overseeing children’s cases in immigration court required that children’s cases be heard at separate dates and times from cases of unrelated adults. It also directs immigration judges to implement simple, child-friendly procedures such as allowing young children to bring a book or quiet toy to court or allows a child to testify somewhere other than the witness stand; gives children time to establish understanding and rapport with an interpreter before the proceeding starts; and directs judges to consider how a child’s age impacts their ability to understand what is happening. [[link removed]] On January 3rd, the Department of Justice announced it would sue Texas over its new sweeping immigration bill known as SB4.
This lawsuit is a big step in blocking SB4 from taking effect. If implemented, this harmful law would target and criminalize immigrants, including children, for their manner of entry into Texas. We are incredibly grateful to all who signed our petition in December urging the DOJ to block the implementation of the bill. [[link removed]] Your support contributed to this decision!
