NC Values Coalition

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the Friday Five! Every Friday we share our top five articles, stories, and quotes for you to read and share with your friends and church families.

We would be very grateful if you could make a donation of $100, $50, $25, or $10 today towards our work producing these Friday Fives and fighting for your values on the public square!

1. NC VALUES: Sign our petition to protect our children

When it comes to parental consent, North Carolina is one of most liberal states in the country.

Did you know that in our state your child needs your medical consent to be treated for an ingrown toenail? In contrast, NC is also one of fifteen states where a minor AT ANY age, living with their parents, can consent to the following treatment without parental permission (and can deny the parent access to the medical record thereof):

  • STDs
  • AIDs
  • Drugs/alcohol abuse
  • Pregnancy
  • Emotional disturbance

Parents are not only denied the right to consent, but they are also denied the right to even know what their children are going through.

If you would like to help us change this, would you consider signing our pro-family petition to repeal statute NCGS 90-21.5(a) at ncvalues.org/parents?

2. NC VALUES: Opportunity Scholarship registration period started on February 1st and ends March 1st

Yesterday, February 1st, marked the opening of registration for the North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship. And this year, the Opportunity Scholarship is open to any school-aged child, because it was made “Universal” by our Republican legislators last year.

The North Carolina Opportunity Scholarship is a state-funded, income-based program that offers scholarship monies for students in grades K-12 to attend any eligible, non-public school on a full- or part-time basis. Schools that are eligible are those who will receive direct payments. This allows parents to choose which school best fits their child’s needs.

To help you determine whether the Universal Opportunity Scholarship is a fit for your family, we’ve put together the following Q/A.

3. NEWS & OBSERVER: Federal complaint accuses NC Parents’ Bill of Rights of anti-LGBTQ discrimination

"'The only group that’s being marginalized is parents, and the Parents’ Bill of Rights was enacted to stop activists from secretly transitioning children, while keeping their parents in the dark,' Tami Fitzgerald, executive director of the N.C. Values Coalition, said in a statement Tuesday. 'This lawsuit is a publicity stunt by activists who are intent on indoctrinating children as young as five with confusing messages about sex and hiding it from their parents. These are grooming tactics that put children and families in danger. Title IX was passed by Congress to give women opportunities in sports and education, not to advance the transgender agenda.”

4. DAILY SIGNAL: The Transgender Administrative State

"We live in a time when a Supreme Court nominee can’t define the difference between a man and a woman, and yet an army of government human resource officers (whose names history will not remember) can fill reams of paper with exactly how workplace policies should govern, celebrate, and enforce every last detail of how to approach the matter of gender identity. These policies stem from action from the very top.”

5. DAILY SIGNAL: New Jersey Dad Sues School Over Daughter’s Secret Gender Transition

"A father is suing a Garden State school district after his daughter’s gender transition was allegedly kept a secret from him. The father, who is remaining anonymous to protect his daughter’s identity, found that New Jersey’s Delaware Valley Regional High School had been calling his daughter by a male name and male pronouns for at least two months, after a pro-LGBT student club’s staff adviser—who is not licensed to practice either medicine or psychology, according to the lawsuit—asked teachers and other school staff, faculty, and administration to refer to the girl by a male name and male pronouns and not to tell her father. 'I was devastated,' the father said. 'If a kid gets a headache in school, they have to call the parents to give them Tylenol, but they’re going to choose to allow them to identify as something?'"

Weekly Prayer: Life

LORD, we recognize that you are Sovereign over all creation. We recognize you made man from the dust, and in your mercy, you crowned creation with man and woman made in your image. What a wonder it is that you would bestow upon us this blessing and responsibility!

LORD, may we not take this blessing for granted. We pray that this great responsibility and dignity may motivate us to love You, our neighbors, and our families more. LORD, may we as a culture truly see and believe that children are a blessing from the LORD—born or unborn; able or disabled. All children should have an opportunity to experience the liberty of life. LORD, make us your vehicle to change our culture into one that cherishes and protects life. Keep at the forefront of our minds our responsibilities to respect, cherish, and serve the youngest and oldest in our society.

"At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, 'Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: 'Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.'" (Matthew 18:1-6)

Amen
