HIGHLIGHTS
Persistent school absence has a real impact on a child's life chances.

Labour has a plan to fix the crisis, backed by the government's own former education recovery commissioner.

The minister's answer? Yet more waffle.

Those who come from overseas to work in our health and care system make an immense contribution and have helped keep services afloat.

Rather than using them to make petty political points, the government should focus on developing a NHS and social care workforce fit for the future.

There are too many parts of the country where children's services are letting children and their families down.

Where local authorities are failing in this vital statutory duty, the government needs to act quickly to ensure children are protected.

The Horizon Scandal has done untold damage to the reputation of the Post Office.

It is vital that Ministers work to restore public trust in a Great British brand.

The Teesworks issue shows us the need for much greater oversight and accountability of Mayoral Development Corporations.

Given MDCs are being rolled out across England, we need to hear more from Ministers on how these bodies will be held to account.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's rhetoric is putting the path to a two-state solution at serious risk.

It is incumbent on the Foreign Secretary to ensure the Israeli government are held to account for their damaging words.

I signed the Holocaust Memorial Day Remembrance Book in Parliament, in memory of all those victims of the horrors of the Nazi’s Holocaust, which oversaw the extermination of more than 6 million Jews and others who didn’t fit their warped ideology including the LGBT community, disabled people, Roma and more.

It’s also important to remember many other horrific genocides which have also taken place in living memory in places like Cambodia, Bosnia and Rwanda.

We vow to learn ALL lessons from the past to help prevent humanity’s capacity for evil continuing in the world today and preventing history repeating in the future.
We had a fantastic turnout from Gorton & Denton Labour Party for Azhar Ali, our brilliant candidate for Rochdale.

Today Deputy Leader Angela Rayner MP launched the campaign, and lots of teams of activists hit the streets of the town. Let’s win this for Tony!

I had a good visit to Denton West Cricket Club with the Team Denton West Councillors to congratulate and celebrate the club’s success on receiving funding from the Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund.

This funding will pay for new recyclable benches for more people to enjoy watching the cricket!

We also discussed their plans for a new club house and other improved facilities and what funding opportunities might be available to them. I’ve offered for my office to signpost them to some funding streams we know about.
A big thank you to Denton Community College for inviting Cllr Allison Gwynne and I to come and join the panel of PROUD Friday!

It’s such a brilliant initiative to encourage pupils to show off a piece of work they’re proud of. The buzz around it is amazing.
We also got to see the Careers Fair being held with all kind of apprenticeship and college options on display. I got to try my hand at being a weatherman (it’s easier said than done) and also got to chat to two ex-DCC pupils who were there to promote A Level courses at Clarendon Sixth Form.

I lost my House of Commins pin badge in a game of rock, paper, scissors with them, there’s a lesson in life there!
A great visit to Manor Green Primary Academy in Haughton Green to be quizzed by the School Councillors about my job as a Member of Parliament.

We covered lots of issues from democracy to the history of Parliament, and the Monarchy to what I’ve done in my time as MP for Denton and Reddish.

Great questions, and a lovely interactive session with the rest of the school too!
Andrew in the the media

Last week, Labour published a long-term plan to tackle persistent school absence and drive high and rising standards in education, an issue I raised in this week’s Education Questions in Parliament.

Levels of persistent school absence in Tameside have almost doubled in the last five years.

Staggeringly, more than one in four parents think school isn’t essential every day, with ever more children consistently missing out on vital learning.

We face a lost generation missing from Britain’s schools. Is there any better evidence of national decline under the Conservatives?

Being in school, learning and making friends, is the best place for every child.

If children aren’t in school, we won’t get the high and rising standards all our children deserve.

Absence harms every child, not just the children missing school.

That’s why absence is one of the biggest challenges we must tackle to break down barriers to opportunity for every child.

Only Labour has a long-term plan to tackle this.

The Education Secretary has belatedly claimed that reducing absence is her ‘number one priority’.

Again, following where Labour leads.

Just as we saw with crumbling schools, only acting once the problem spirals out of control.

Throughout fourteen years of Tory-driven decline, they have shown they do not care about improving the life chances of other peoples’ children.

But the next Labour government will put education back at the forefront of national life, as part of our mission to break down barriers to opportunity.

Labour will tackle the causes of school absence.

We’ll roll out free breakfast clubs in every primary school, driving up attendance and attainment.

We’ll secure mental health support inside and outside the school gates, with counsellors in secondary schools and hubs in the community.

We’ll reform school inspections, introducing annual checks on attendance.

We’ll join-up data to spot issues early and support families, nipping problems in the bud.

We’ll deliver a reformed curriculum and assessment system to engage every child.

We’ll reset the broken relationship between government, schools and families.
Under Labour, we’ll be partners in the push for better.

A party putting children first.

A government prioritising education.

A country where excellence is for everyone.

Our vision for education is simple but powerful, that background must be no barrier to opportunity.

Keir Starmer has fired the starting gun on the General Election campaign and opportunity, education and families will be at the heart of Labour’s message.
