Dear John,
Our Government is moving fast to deliver the change New Zealanders voted for at the last election, including by rebuilding our economy after years of mismanagement under Labour.
To help get our economy back on track, we’ve already stopped work on Labour’s Jobs Tax and Auckland Light Rail, repealed the Ute Tax and got the Reserve Bank solely focused on reducing inflation. We’re also underway with getting public sector spending under control.
A good future indicator of a strong economy is how many of our young people are in school and achieving today, and while the return of the school year this week has been exciting for a lot of young Kiwis, far too many are not showing up for school. On top of that, NCEA pass rates have fallen for a third consecutive year.
Making sure our kids are in school, learning, and mastering the key skills they need to succeed is a key priority for me.
That’s why this Government has made it mandatory for primary and intermediate schools to teach at least an hour each of reading, writing and maths every single day. We’re also banning phones in classrooms from next term so young people are focused on learning.
These changes have the potential to set students up for success and we all need to make sure kids are in school. Every single day of learning matters.
Here are some other changes you may have missed this week:
- Fast tracking consent for resource management changes which will improve speed and process for resource approvals for major infrastructure projects <[link removed]>
- Contributing $15million to support councils and communities to build flood resilience across Tauranga, Coromandel and Port Waikato <[link removed]>
- National MP for Takanini, Rima Nakhle’s members bill was drawn from the ballot on Wednesday which will protect vulnerable victims of crime <[link removed]>
The Government is working hard to deliver our 100-day plan, focused on rebuilding the economy, restoring law and order and delivering better public services, and the actions we’ve already taken are just the beginning.
Thank you,
Christopher
P.S. I would like you to think about joining thousands of New Zealanders who are members of the National Party to shape the future of our country for this generation and the next.
