** It's Groundhog Day All Over Again
------------------------------------------------------------
It has been one hell of a month for the United States of America. The kind of month that finds itself in the history books. In fact, so much has happened this month that it is hard to understand how it is all related.
“How is that?” you may ask. It is simple. We have entered the final phase of GOP power politics. The “it's my way or the highway” crowd is at its apex, and it is very possible that our nation will once again bleed as a result.
By linking Israeli and Ukrainian aid to a border deal and then backing out on both is the clearest sign yet that the members of the Republican Caucus have chosen their party over their people and are no longer interested in solving the problems of the nation. This paralysis has led directly to the strengthening of Russia in Europe and prolonged Israel’s struggle against Hamas.
Allowing a private citizen, no matter his past positions, to not only influence but to completely derail national policy decisions is a further sign of a party whose sacred oath has replaced the word “constitution” with the word “Trump.”
Finally, for the second time in 162 years the State of Texas sent a letter to the United States Government demanding their “right” to treat human beings like chattel. This time in direct defiance of the Supreme Court of the United States. Supposedly, the final arbiter in our nation of laws. So much for the party of law and order.
What is the answer if SCOTUS is not? Is open rebellion, such as Texas supporting the answer? Is it a “national divorce” (secession is a bad word in the south) as Marjorie Taylor Greene is advocating? Or is it allowing serious national issues to fester in the hopes of securing future political power, as the entirety of the Republican party seems willing to do?
None of these answers feel right to me, and I suspect that none of them feel right to you either. There is no denying that something is wrong. But what do we do when one side simply walks away from the table?
- It has been over 100 days (about 3 and a half months) since the Biden administration asked Congress for financial and military aid for Israel and Ukraine
- The first truly bi-partisan border deal Congress has considered in 42 years is in danger because a private citizen, who has been found guilty of rape, found guilty of fraud, and is facing an additional 91 indictments is running for President.
- The government has been under constant threat of shutdown with the next deadlines just over a month away and there appears to be very little desire by the members of the far-right to find a compromise. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the GOP shut down the government just to rile their base.
- A Republican governor has openly defied the authority of the Supreme Court of the United States. Essentially questioning the very foundation of our nation. If there is no recognized supreme authority, then what?
Seriously, then what? Do we all just willy-nilly do what we please? Can the federal government go ahead and eliminate all student debt although the Supreme Court has ruled against that idea? Should the Biden Administration start opening federally funded abortion clinics in states that have passed laws otherwise, again, ignoring the Court? Where does this chaos end? And what is the end game?
The end game for the Republican party is the same as it has been since Trump descended the golden stair and declared his will manifest and peddled his hatreds as policy. The GOP desires power, pure and simple. The power to dictate what you read, the power to dictate what you can learn, the power to prevent you from making personal medical decisions, especially if you are female or LBGTQ. They want the power to ensure that they and their friends will not be held accountable for misdeeds or crimes. They want the power to destroy anything they don’t agree with or that makes them uncomfortable. Ultimately, they just want power.
The only things that we can do to stop it is to elect more Democrats and re-elect Joe Biden. The first two years of his administration featured the most productive congressional session in history, passing 362 proposals including: The CHIPS Act, the Infrastructure Act, the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, along with numerous laws to protect our children from human traffickers, improve the lives of our veterans and expand the rights of workers.
By comparison, the first year of the Republican controlled Congress was damn near the least productive congressional year in history, passing only 34 items. Two of which were continuing resolutions to prevent a government shutdown. Seriously, the split is that drastic. And it is not Democrats that are getting in the way. It is Republicans.
Whether they are fighting with their brethren in the Senate or fighting each other in the House, the far-right of the Republican party has managed to hold its leadership, the House itself, and the nation at large hostage to their increasingly unrealistic demands. The GOP quite literally reminds me of a hysterical child, pitching a public fit, knowing that their parents can’t or won’t do anything so long as they are still in public.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, we are the parents. We are the people. It is up to us to solve these problems and the most powerful tool we have is our voice. The only practical solution to this current mess is to elect more Democrats. So, please, find a candidate in your area and give them your support! Give them your money, give them your talent, and give them your time. It is going to take all of us to win this election!
We are in this Together!
Legislation
Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 - Raises the Child Tax Credit through 2025 while also providing small business tax breaks and incentives. Passed the House Jan. 31, 2024
Bi-Partisan Senate Immigration Reform - Provides specific guidelines and authority for the POTUS to close the border; reforms asylum and parole laws. Negotiations continue in the Senate; bill appears to be non-starter in House due to GOP/Trump influence.
Israeli and Ukranian Aid Packages - over 100 days since submitted for consideration. No action pending.
Continuing Resolutions regarding the government - Both deadlines moved to early March. Background negotiations continuing, but no true deals seem to be emerging.
