My name is Shawn Carney and I'm the President of 40 Days for Life and author of To the Heart of the Matter.
I was first confronted with the evil of abortion when Planned Parenthood opened one of their killing centers in Bryan-College Station, Texas --- home of Texas A&M University where I was a student at the time.
That was in 2004. Back then, a small group of us met to develop a strategy to try and stop this horrible development in our community, but all of our attempts failed.
Frustrated with the situation --- four of us began to pray.
And that's how we settled on the idea for the first 40 Days for Life campaign, which included these 3 basic tenets:
- 40 days of prayer and fasting
- 40 days of a nonstop, peaceful, prayerful vigil outside a local abortion facility
- 40 days of grassroots outreach
In that first campaign more than 100 babies were saved and over 1,000 people got involved.
40 Days for Life then began to spread by word of mouth and was duplicated in nearby towns --- and now this same model is being used in cities across 50 states and 61 countries (with two campaigns each year --- one in the Spring and one in the Fall).
Since then, over 1,000,000 prayer warriors have joined our ranks.
