John,
Mitch McConnell wants to put Social Security privatizer Andrew Biggs on the Social Security Advisory Board just in time for McConnell’s House counterpart, Mike Johnson, to convene a commission to meet behind closed doors and make cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
At the Senate Finance Committee hearing yesterday, Elizabeth Warren said she doesn’t "understand why we are being asked to confirm someone whose plan for strengthening Social Security is to gut its protection."
Social Security Works is mobilizing the resistance to this anti-Social Security nominee. Can you rush a donation to defeat this nomination?
Sen. Warren continued:
"In all fairness to Mr. Biggs [...] his plan is Republicans' plan. Republican policymakers have spent years trying to undermine Social Security by pushing to reduce benefits, to raise the retirement age, and to cut payroll taxes that keep the program alive."
Republican politicians try to hide the truth, but the question their commission will confront behind closed doors is simple. Who should be made worse-off by changes to Social Security? People who rely on Social Security to retire in dignity, or the ultra-wealthy who are not paying their fair share because of the cap on payroll contributions?
Senator Warren put that question to Biggs:
"Raising the payroll tax income cap so that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share would extend Social Security's solvency by 75 years. But if you take raising revenue from the wealthiest people off the table, then that leaves one option to extend Social Security's solvency, and that is benefit cuts."
Biggs answered that he would "prefer not to" make the rich pay their fair share.
Andrew Biggs is a threat to our Social Security system. If he gets his way, our Social Security system will be reduced from a beloved universal benefit that we all can count on to a subsistence-level anti-poverty program―all so his wealthy patrons can buy another yacht.
Elizabeth Warren is right! The Senate should REJECT this dangerous nomination! Donate $7 to STOP putting a Social Security privatizer on the Social Security Advisory Board!
Thank you,
