Updates from the Frontlines of Global Struggles

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our #WeShowUp End-of-Year Fundraising Campaign — we met our goal and raised over $1.5M to support social movements globally! Many of you also made crucial contributions to our Palestine emergency fund in this critical moment.

Your support has enabled us to hit the ground running in our accompaniment of vital movements for justice and liberation across the globe — some highlights of which are below.

Please stay tuned for ways to continue to deepen your knowledge and engage with us this year.

On the Anniversary of Haiti’s Independence, Redoubling Solidarity

On January 1, 1804, the Haitian people asserted their independence from colonial rule and slavery, establishing the first free republic in the Americas. Today, while we celebrate this incredible feat of liberation, we redouble our commitment to stand in solidarity with the Haitian people and follow the lead of Haitian movements in a moment of multi-pronged crisis.

Struggle Advances Democracy in Guatemala

Following more than 100 days of sustained struggles for democracy, on January 14, 2024, Bernardo Arévalo was sworn in as the third democratically elected President of Guatemala. Guatemalan movements have seen their struggle not against a single corrupt regime, but against the ongoing legacies of colonization and genocide.

Long-Term Partnership Toward Food Sovereignty

Few struggles have shaped the trajectory of Grassroots International’s work as much as the global movement for food sovereignty, galvanized by our partner La Via Campesina (LVC). Most recently, several of our staff members participated in LVC’s 8th International Conference, attended by more than 400 delegates in Bogota, Colombia.

Going to Court to Stop a Genocide

This month, Palestinians and others — including our partners and allies — have taken to international and US courts to stop the genocide. In the words of Dr. Raji Sourani of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, “The [International] Court [of Justice] has been clear. Israel must end, with immediate effect, its genocidal war.”

Seeing Occupation First-Hand

Even before 10/7/2023, the situation in Palestine was dire. A member of our August 2023 delegation to the West Bank writes on what he saw — and what he's been hearing from Palestinians as attacks in the West Bank have increased alongside the genocide in Gaza.

A Ruling Against Justice in Louisiana, But Struggle Continues

We stand with our US-based grantee ally RISE St. James in their ongoing struggle against the proposed construction of a massive plastics factory in a community already besieged by environmental injustices.

A Resolution for Long-Haul Solidarity

Have you set a resolution for the new year to be intentional in care of loved ones, cultivate community care, or help to resource the next generation's struggle for our collective liberation?

We are happy to continue partnering with FreeWill this year to offer people of all income levels a free online tool to create a will — with the option of including a planned gift to support Grassroots International’s movement accompaniment work.
