Hello, Friends —

We stand strong in the face of evil.

We love in the face of hate.

Like all Americans, I am horrified at the senseless violence and terror that recently tore at the heart of our nation. We are stronger than the cowards that perpetrated this bloodshed. I stand with the grieving communities in Ohio and Texas, and pray they will bind together to overcome these tragedies.

CHINA AND TRADE

President Trump has recently labeled China a currency manipulator, a designation supported by members of both political parties. This bold move was necessary to counteract China’s harmful behavior.

I am glad that President Trump is taking a tough stance against China — American innovation should not suffer from China’s longstanding predatory actions.

American innovators have been ripped off by China for too long, and firm action is necessary for our national and economic well-being.

I recently appeared on “The Next Revolution” on Fox News to discuss China, clean energy, and more — watch it here!

COMEY BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT

I also recently discussed the DOJ’s decision not to prosecute James Comey for leaks, which you can watch below. For more information on Comey’s mishandling of documents, see this article from John Solomon in The Hill.

LEGISLATION, NOT VACATION

August has not been a vacation month for me. I’m busy working on legislation and supporting initiatives that benefit my constituents in Northwest Florida. I recently cosponsored H.R. 3971, the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act

This bill, introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), would eliminate the “double taxation” currently imposed on recipients of Social Security. Since Social Security is financed by Americans’ tax dollars, taxing it as income not only counts as double taxation, it greatly reduces benefits to seniors. I’m proud to support this legislation and our nation’s senior citizens!

I am also proud to be leading a bill with my colleague, friend, and fellow Floridian, Rep. Donna Shalala: the Student Loan Disclosure Transparency Act. This legislation requires that students who receive federal student loans receive a monthly loan disclosure statement in simple, understandable terms, including a clear disclosure of projected monthly payments.

Excessive student loan debt has harmed generations of young Americans. More transparency in the student loan process is crucial: it will improve financial literacy, and will also help borrowers understand the financial commitments they are making. I hope that my colleagues in both parties will support this legislation, and look forward to its swift consideration by the House.
