Winter is in full swing, and we have some exciting ice fishing opportunities coming up that you're not going to want to miss!
It's been an interesting start to the ice fishing season as we navigated challenging weather, but the recent drop in temperatures has created better conditions for ice formation in most areas. Some of the larger water bodies have yet to freeze or have areas that are still unsafe to fish, but many of Maine?s smaller waters have seen anglers for a few weeks.?As always, use caution when venturing out on the ice and always check the ice conditions [ [link removed] ] for yourself.?
Maine has a variety of fish species waiting to be discovered in its stocked waters. Whether you're after the colorful brook trout, the spirited splake, or the mighty salmon, be sure to view the stocking report to find a fishing opportunity near you. [ [link removed] ]
*Free Fishing Weekend is coming up on February 17th and 18th!* No fishing license is required during this time. This falls on February Vacation, making it the perfect opportunity to get on the ice and introduce friends and family to the joy of angling. There are also a number of fishing derbies [ [link removed] ] coming up to create exceptional ice fishing experiences. Mark your calendar, prepare your tackle, and lets make this February one to remember on the frozen lakes!
A top tip from our fisheries biologists is to bring a jig rod! Jigging can be highly effective for many fish species and can keep novice anglers engaged on the occasional slow day. When jigging, experiment with different colors and speeds. You never know what the fish might be looking for at that moment, or how the light through the ice is changing the color of your lure.
