Today, on the first day of Black History Month , I wanted to take some time to recognize, celebrate, and reflect on the achievements, contributions, and struggles of Black individuals throughout our state’s history.
Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher fought for admission into OU’s law school, John Hope Franklin advocated tirelessly for civil rights, and Clara Luper dedicated her life to equal access and opportunity. From 1856 to 1920, our state saw the establishment of over 50 towns, including Greenwood and Black Wall Street, with predominantly Black populations - more than any other state in the nation during that time.
John, Black history is Oklahoma history.
In this month of celebration and reflection, let's continue working together to uplift the rich cultural heritage of Black communities, raise awareness, and foster a better understanding of each other so we can find solutions to the challenges we face.
