2024 is already looking to be filled with a lot of events, community outreach, and advocacy. And in order to be able to meet the needs of advocating for New Liberal policies and leaders, the CNL team is expanding! We are currently seeking a
Projects Associate to join our team, full-time in D.C. This entry-level position has a lot of room for growth and, in an election year as unique as this, is going to be a key part of the organization. To learn more about the role and how to apply, please visit cnliberalism.org/jobs. |

First up on deck is YIMBYtown! On
February 26th, YIMBYtown descends on Austin, TX. This convening should help us better connect with our housing allies across the country. We’re excited to be a sponsor of this fantastic event, and CNL staff, as well as New Liberals from our four Texas chapters (Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, and Austin), will be attending! If you are planning on attending, come stop by our booth at the conference, and don't forget to tag us in your pictures during the conference! Our chapters have really started the year strong with chapters endorsing state-level and local races, kicking off an event series discussing liberalism, and of course, happy hours where we can get together for a more casual conversation on how to advocate for change. We're also excited to see a number of new and returning chapters hosting their first events in Jan/Feb. We add events on a rolling basis, so please
check our events page for an event in your community, here. Last but not least, block off your calendars on May 16-18 for NLAS D.C. Our third annual conference in D.C. will have
political action, policy discussions, and receptions for sharing ideas and opportunities for action but also to check in with our peers and fellow New Libs, organizing across the world. We will also again have a New Liberals retreat to hone our skills and strategize for this big year.
We're drafting the program, but if you have an idea for a panel or for a speaker, give us your suggestions by filling out this form. |

Liberal Currents - Against Activist Mission Creep By Jeremiah Johnson, CNL Co-Founder | January 10, 2024
"There’s a common theme here. Organizations that appear to be single-issue advocacy groups are increasingly commenting and taking stances on issues outside of their narrow focus. Activism is becoming more global in nature—if you are an activist for one cause, you’re expected to speak up about all causes now."
Asterisks Magazine - Prediction Markets Have an Elections Problem By Jeremiah Johnson, CNL Co-Founder | January 2024
“Some of the largest and most notable prediction markets to date have been around elections. The only problem? Prediction markets simply aren’t very good at political predictions.” CNN Opinion - New data is making us rethink the narrative about runaway inequality By Jordan McGillis | January 18th, 2024
"New research by economists Gerald Auten and David Splinter indicates that the prevailing narrative of runaway inequality is not as empirically sound as believed. But in proving that the top 1% has not pulled much further ahead in terms of income, Auten and Splinter inadvertently reveal that America suffers from troubling socioeconomic fissures nonetheless." The Messenger - New Tax Deal Imperfectly Invests in Our Future By Laura Duffy, CNL Steering Committee Member | January 20th, 2024
“But despite its shortcomings, this tax deal’s CTC expansion will support working families and meaningfully address child poverty, while the business tax provisions will bolster innovation and increase prosperity for current and future generations. Congress should seize this opportunity to invest in America’s future and pass the package by Jan. 29 so it takes effect before the upcoming tax filing season begins.” |

Construction Physics | “No inventions; no innovations," a History of US Steel Brian Potter
This piece offers an interesting dive into the history of US Steel, which, after a century of domination, is being acquired by Japanese company Nippon Steel. The company's history reveals the pitfalls of failing to innovate and relying on monopoly power and political influence to maintain a competitive advantage.
The Atlantic | The Culture War Tearing American Environmentalism Apart Jerusalem Demsas
Jerusalem Demsas has yet another fantastic piece out, this time covering the growing divide among environmentalists in Minneapolis over the city's housing reforms. The environmental movement is facing a reckoning, as the push among younger environmentalists to build more dense housing to address climate change is coming into conflict with the older environmentalist’s misguided opposition to any and all new development.
NYT Opinion | Trump Has Devoured the Republican Establishment Lakshya Jain & Armin Thomas
This fantastic dive into election data from the Split Ticket team presents a compelling argument that despite the efforts of moderate Republicans and their extensive donor network, former President Trump has not just emerged victorious over the Republican establishment – he’s become the Republican establishment. Their analysis makes it clear that the former president’s dominance over the party is near absolute – a worrying sign for those of us working to fight back against populism and extremism in US politics.
