John,
Last night, I voted against a Republican-led tax cut for the wealthy and corporations that would deepen wealth inequality and economic injustice.
If this bill becomes law, in the first year, the richest 120,000 households would receive a larger share of the tax benefits than the bottom 88 million families—with the poorest 20% of families receiving just $60 on average.
This is yet another handout to corporations that are already dodging paying their fair share in taxes. For example, multi-billion dollar corporation Meta (formerly Facebook) would see its tax rate fall from 25% to -2%. That’s outrageous. Working families should never be paying higher taxes than the richest companies on earth.
Republicans and corporate Democrats got their corporate tax handouts in exchange for modest changes to the Child Tax Credit. Unfortunately, those modest changes leave behind millions of the very poorest families.
That’s why it’s time to replace the Child Tax Credit with my universal End Child Poverty Act, which would lift millions of people out of poverty, providing families with a monthly child allowance of $428 per child until the child’s 19th birthday.
In 2021, when Congress expanded the Child Tax Credit to reach all families with young kids, we cut child poverty nearly in half, which was life changing for millions of families, allowing them to afford basic necessities such as food, utilities, and housing.
My bill would cut child poverty by 61% and the deepest child poverty by 93%. It would provide more robust benefits than the Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit—and would cover the lowest-wealth families in the country, who are left out of the current tax credit system.
Add your name today to become a grassroots co-sponsor of my End Child Poverty Act, which would dramatically cut child poverty by providing families with a universal benefit from children’s birth through their teenage years.
Together, we’re challenging the unjust status quo and pushing for the bold, transformative policies that our communities deserve. Thank you for joining me in demanding Congress put the needs of millions of vulnerable families above the greed of millionaires, billionaires, and large profitable corporations.
Always serving you,
Rashida
