In 2022, Democrats fought for and secured an $80 billion investment in the IRS over 10 years. In order to avoid a government shutdown last year, they were forced to make a deal with Republicans to cut $20 billion of that funding. Eager to do anything but pay their own taxes and anger millionaire donors , Republicans have now demanded more IRS cuts by including them as poison pills in essential government funding bills this month.

Cuts to IRS funding will result in less revenue and grow the federal deficit by at least $114 billion in the next 10 years. But Republicans want this — they’ll use it as an excuse to cut vital programs like Social Security, Medicare, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
