Dear Friend,
Thanks to your support, nearly 5,000 refugee girls in Kenya now have access to menstrual hygiene products.
Over the past few days, I joined USCRI staff on the ground in Kenya to help deliver over half a million sanitary pads to women and girls in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps. But none of this would be possible without generous donors like you who answered the call by raising over $22,000 to address the urgent needs of women and girls in these camps where tens of thousands have no access to basic menstrual hygiene care.
Your support is positively impacting every aspect of their lives.
Menstruation has an incredibly compounding impact on girls’ ability to stay in school. Poor toilet facilities cause a lack of privacy for girls during menstruation as well as health risks. With a shortage of menstrual hygiene materials, such as sanitary pads and soap, girls often resort to reusing unsanitary pieces of cloth, which leads to infection and other health risks. These factors, coupled with ongoing stigma and discrimination within the community around menstruation, force girls to miss weeks of school at a time or to drop out altogether.
Nearly 5,000 girls are now on their way to improving their physical and mental health while ensuring their ability to attend school. All thanks to you.
As USCRI expands its programming in Kenya, we look forward to sharing more updates about the impact our recent visit and our work is having on refugee women and girls.
With my thanks,
Eskinder Negash
