Hello John,

Every February is a time for reflection and celebration of Black history in America.

This month, we at GLSEN are dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black activists who have played pivotal roles in shaping a more inclusive and anti-racist society. Our focus for Black History Month is on iconic figures such as Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Marsha P. Johnson—individuals whose legacies continue to inspire and challenge us.

Although these trailblazing activists have left an indelible mark on advancing equality for marginalized communities, there is still an incredible amount of work to be done.
According to GLSEN’s National School Climate survey, 82% of LGBTQ+ youth reported feeling unsafe in school — and these censorship laws only cause more harm to Black queer students, who are already some of the most marginalized and excluded youth in our nation.

As we continue to face anti-democratic attacks on learning and truth, we must empower supportive school leaders, educators, and staff to act as guardians of our democracy.

School communities must be sites of safety, connection, power and ultimately, liberation.

Our work to make this a reality for Black LGBTQ+ students does not end when February is over.
