Iran Seizes Vessel in Persian Gulf

On Sunday, Iranian forces announced that it had seized a foreign vessel in international waters and detained its seven crew members. The seizure took place last Wednesday. If verified, this would be the third time in two weeks that Iranian forces seized a foreign vessel in the Persian Gulf. This also follows Iran&rsquo;s announcement on Saturday that it will take another step to reduce its compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. The regime has repeatedly said it will reduce its commitment to the nuclear accord in stages and may even withdrew from the pact altogether unless the remaining signatories find ways to shield its economy from U.S. sanctions.

Shin Bet Foils Hamas Terror Plot Against Israel and Palestinians

The Israel Security Agency, Shin Bet, thwarted a major Hamas terrorist attack in Jerusalem after an explosive charge ready for use and a laboratory were uncovered in Hebron. The cell had been planning the attack before it was broken up by a joint Shin Bet, IDF and Israel Police investigation. It was operating under direction from Hamas’ military wing in the Gaza Strip to carry out attacks against Israeli and Palestinian Authority targets. Cell members were instructed to establish teams for carrying out kidnapping, shooting and stabbing attacks, to purchase weapons and to recruit others for carrying out terrorist attacks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the security forces, saying “our enemies should know that our long arm will reach whoever tries to attack us.”

Israel Successfully Launches Satellite into Space

SpaceX successfully launched Israeli communication satellite Amos-17 into orbit from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Tuesday night, promising increased internet connectivity for sub-Saharan Africa once operational. President Reuven Rivlin hailed the successful launch, saying it was a “morning full of pride,” and thanking those involved for their “important work for the State of Israel.” The satellite is expected to operate for 20 years and provide services to customers in Africa to help meet the country’s fast-growing communication demands. It will offer increased connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, India, China and as far west as Brazil. The firm has already received orders for services totaling $58 million.

Members of Congress Arrive in Israel

It’s one thing to talk about Israel, it’s another to experience Israel. On Monday, close to 40 Democratic members of Congress began a week-long experience in Israel with the American Israel Education Foundation—the charitable organization affiliated with AIPAC. Republican House members flew to Israel on Thursday to begin their trip. The two trips will overlap, and the members of Congress will spend time together developing a bipartisan partnership with each other around the U.S.-Israel relationship.

U.S., Israel, Cyprus, Greece Discuss Energy Cooperation

Energy ministers from the United States, Israel, Cyprus and Greece say they have been deepening their cooperation in the energy sector, noting that while energy issues can create regional tension, they can also foster cooperation. Cyprus Energy Minister Georgios Lakkotrypis, speaking after talks in Athens, said he had received support from his counterparts from Greece, Israel and the U.S. regarding his country’s right to drill for natural resources. Israeli Minister of Energy Yuval Steinitz also expressed hope for speedy progress on the East Med pipeline, a project to link eastern Mediterranean gas deposits to Europe.
