Here is where things stand: Voting is about to begin in the Primary, and we are facing Newsom’s staffer and protégé, Jessica Morse. Newsom and Morse are desperate for us to have an underwhelming showing in the Primary. They believe this will catalyze her campaign and pave the way for our defeat in the general election.

That’s why it’s vital that we have a strong showing: it will upend their entire strategy. In fact, with a strong enough performance, we will establish ourselves as the clear favorites in November and totally demoralize the Newsom-Morse camp.

As Nevada County’s Union newspaper reported yesterday:

Democrats think they can flip Kiley’s seat. Local Democrats, who call Morse their endorsed candidate, are organizing weekly phone banks and canvassing operations in an effort, as they put it, to "Kick Kiley Out." Then there’s the monthly demonstration to "Unmask Kevin Kiley."

To an extent, this is all expected. We did, after all, win the decisive 218th seat in the House. Taking back our seat is what the Democrats must do to restore Pelosi or her successor as Speaker, shift the Judiciary Committee gavel from Jim Jordan to Jerry Nadler, and take a million other actions that will move our country in a disastrous direction.

Yet the level of opposition we are seeing extends beyond what even those very high stakes would elicit on their own. This is the one race where Gavin Newsom himself has decided to take an enormous risk and send in his own personal "Deputy Secretary," who has been groomed by his political operation for the last five years.

Beyond Newsom's personal involvement, the concerted efforts against us by Democrats at the national, state, and county level also suggest they know how much is on the line.

They know our victories are adding up: that in our first year we have shaken up Capitol Hill and built a foundation for significant change.
