January 2024
State & Federal Update

Georgia’s legislative session officially kicked off on January 8, 2024.  For Georgia Life Alliance, pre-session meetings began back in July 2023 with dozens of legislators and House & Senate leadership.  Our priorities remain focused on giving a voice to the voiceless, supporting both mother and baby, and engaging fathers to build family, the fabric of a stable society.

A short 8 days into session, Georgia’s conservative leadership coalition met with the Governor’s policy team to thank them for full support of our collective legislative agendas, including GLA’s primary agenda item: to increase funding for Georgia’s pregnancy resource centers - the boots on the ground who meet women where they are with full, comprehensive support of mother and baby.

Less than two weeks later, Governor Brian Kemp met with our coalition to discuss his priorities and how we can help him further a pro-life, pro-family, conservative policies in Georgia.

Meanwhile…

On January 22, the anniversary of Roe, 22 pro-abortion state senators introduced a resolution to enshrine a right to abortion in Georgia’s state constitution.  If a measure such as  Senate Resolution 136 passes with the requisite 2/3 vote, it would put language on the ballot for a constitutional “right to reproductive freedom.”  This is why keeping a pro-life majority in both chambers is vitally important.

Following the Georgia March for Life and in partnership with Leadership Institute, GLA will be hosting Pro-Life Lobby Day.  You can join us in promoting and thanking legislators for good policy and fighting against attempts to shift the culture via ballot measures and other bad policy.  With limited seating, we are already almost full.  Reserve your spot today!

If you can’t make our Pro-Life Lobby Day, would you prayerfully consider giving $25, $50, or $100 toward our efforts?  It costs about $75 every single day to be at the Capitol.

This does not include the cost of meetings, events, and educational materials. Your $500 donation would help support an entire week of lobbying! You could play a major role in our efforts to promote life-affirming legislation while stopping legislation such as S.R. 136.

Federal Update

Two important pieces of pro-life legislation have passed the U.S. House!

Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act (H.R.6918)

The Biden Administration is currently proposing a rule to restrict federal funds from going to pregnancy centers in a number of states that direct funds to them through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. H.R. 6918 would ensure that pregnancy centers are eligible for state-directed federal funds through TANF programs and prohibit Health and Human Services from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing this or any similar rule-making that would restrict use of TANF for pregnancy centers.

Pregnant Students’ Rights Act (H.R. 6914)

H.R. 6914 would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to require institutions of higher education to provide students with:

  • A list of the resources that exist to help pregnant students and students who are caring for a baby after birth.

  • Information about the accommodation available for pregnant and parenting students.

  • Information on how to file a complaint with the Department of Education based on Title IX and how to file a discrimination complaint with the institution of higher education.

Both of these bills passed along party lines with every Georgia Republican Congressman voting for life!

SCOTUS Watch

The U.S. Supreme Court announces date to hear oral arguments on FDA v Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine.

In December, we shared with you that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the consequential case of FDA v Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine.  This week, SCOTUS released its March calendar announcing it will hear the case on March 26, 2024. This will be the first time the justices will weigh in on abortion since the Dobbs decision of 2022.

DOJ Update

The Department of Justice targets pro-lifers.

Make no mistake, the 2024 election is about the DIGNITY OF HUMAN LIFE.  On Tuesday, 6 pro-life advocates were convicted for peacefully protesting at an abortion clinic with a history of breaking the law.  The activists were sitting, singing hymns, keeping aisle ways clear, not blocking anyone or anything.  For these actions, they were arrested for violating the FACE Act and now convicted could face up to 11 years in prison.  Click image to watch their protest on Twitter /X.

POTUS Update

Biden invited Kate Cox as his guest for the State of the Union address.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, the Biden-Harris administration has made the 2024 election all about LIFE.  Biden will be repeating his SOTU pro-abortion mantra when he announced this month that one of his guests will be Kate Cox, the woman who left Texas to abort her child because she was given an allegedly fatal prenatal diagnosis for her baby.  She is now suing the state of Texas.

We encourage you to read the inspiring words of Georgia pro-life champion, Suzanne Guy, who wrote the following heartening letter to Ms. Cox.
”If there is a heartbeat, there is hope…”
