News from Representative McClellan

Greetings! It’s Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan,

In case you missed it, President Biden recently announced new student loan opportunities for borrowers. If you are enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan, initially took out $12,000 or less for college, and have made 10 years of payments, you are immediately eligible for loan forgiveness. According to new data, over 177,000 borrowers across Virginia are eligible for the Administration’s most affordable repayment plan.

Since 1980, the total cost of four-year public and private colleges has nearly tripled, even after accounting for inflation. Rising costs disproportionately impact low- and middle-income Americans, first-generation college students, and communities of color, who pursue higher education to create new opportunities for themselves and broaden their future career prospects.

In Congress, I remain committed to ensuring education remains a powerful tool to build intergenerational wealth and enable economic mobility. I am a cosponsor of Representative Adams's (NC-12) Clean Slate Series, a series of three bills that aim to remove default records from the credit history of federal student loan borrowers who have acted to rectify their defaulted loans.

If you’re a student loan borrower, you can view more resources and tools at StudentAid.gov/restart. You can find more information on the SAVE Plan at StudentAid.gov/save.

Sincerely,
