Dear John,
84 years ago today, the first Social Security check was issued to Ms. Ida May Fuller. Since then, Social Security has served as a lifeline for millions of Americans, providing financial security to those who need it most.
Tragically, some in Washington are working to undermine this critical program. In September, almost every House Republican voted to cut funding for the Social Security Administration by 30% and many now want to slash benefits through a fast-track commission.
Let's be clear—Every American deserves to retire with dignity after a lifetime of work. We should be working to strengthen and expand Social Security benefits, not privatize and cut them. That's why I'm fighting every day to ensure that our seniors get the benefits they've rightly earned.
Alongside nearly 200 of my Democratic colleagues, I introduced the Social Security 2100 Act. Our bill would enhance benefits for the first time in more than 50 years and ensure that this critical program remains solvent for generations to come.
Alabama’s 7th Congressional District is home to more than 153,000 Social Security recipients who collectively receive more than $224 million in monthly benefits. That includes widows, children, retirees, and disabled workers.
I want you to know that I will continue fighting to protect their benefits and oppose any attempt to implement harmful cuts.
