On this day in 2006, Samuel Alito raised his right hand and was sworn in to be the next associate justice on the United States Supreme Court. And he set up camp on that bench, because that was 18 years ago. 

For nearly two decades, Alito has been wreaking havoc on our fundamental freedoms. He’s spent his time schmoozing with conservative billionaires like Paul Singer and Leonard Leo, taking luxury fishing trips, and potentially leaking major court decisions to right-wing activists (yeah, the Dobbs leak? We know that was you). 

But the way things stand now, being a Supreme Court justice is a lifetime appointment, which means we could have 18 more years of Alito on the bench (or in private jets, as he seems to prefer!). 

It’s time to imagine a new future. Enter the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act. In two clicks, send an email to Congress and demand they support legislation to create 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices.

The TERM Act would create 18-year terms for all Supreme Court justices. On top of that, it would create regular appointments to the Court under each president, depoliticize the confirmation process, and create a Court that reflects the ever-changing views of the American people.

Think of it this way: No more fighting with the likes of Mitch McConnell to try and get a new justice appointed. No more skewed right-wing conservative majorities threatening our fundamental rights. And no more 18+ years tenure. 

If we had term limits today, this wouldn’t be the 18th anniversary of Samuel Alito’s time on the bench—it’d be a long overdue retirement party. 

It’s time for some of the longest serving justices like Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas to pack it up. Email your representatives in Congress now and urge them to support term limits for the Supreme Court.
