The House GOP's frantic odyssey to obtain a scalp — ANY scalp — from the Biden administration progressed on Tuesday as the Homeland Security Committee held a show trial for Secretary Mayorkas. Republicans baselessly accused Mayorkas of having "refused to enforce the laws" and demanded his impeachment; ranking Democrat Bennie Thompson countered by rightfully pointing out that "in a process akin to throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks, Republicans have cooked up vague, unprecedented grounds to impeach Secretary Mayorkas." The Homeland secretary has provided the House with hours of briefings and thousands of documents proving that he hasn't done anything wrong; the GOP has failed to produce any real evidence beyond wildly gesturing at the border and yelling, "SEE? LOOK AT ALL THOSE MIGRANTS." While this is all total bullshit, it's also business as usual from a Republican Party more concerned with getting their Fox News sound bytes than actually addressing any of America's many problems, most of which also happen to be their fault.

2020 election denier files bill to allow Arizona legislature to give election to Trump
Republican state Sen. Anthony Kern has proposed a ridiculous bill that would allow the legislature to override the will of the people and give the state legislature the sole authority to appoint the presidential electors — which we all know is legalese for "steal the election for Donald Trump." Kern not only participated in January 6 but also signed onto a document falsely claiming to be one of Arizona’s electors for Trump. It's unclear what kind of legs — if any at all — this bill might have in the Arizona legislature, but this is a harbinger of what's to come as Trump's minions across the country gear up to try to steal the election a second time. We can't allow them to succeed.

DOJ opens investigation into Rep. Cori Bush's campaign spending on security
Rep. Bush announced that she was fully cooperating with the DOJ's probe into her security spending, which topped $129,000 in 2023. Complicating the issue is that she married one of her former security guards last year, who was paid $42,000 for "security expenses" by her campaign. Congressional candidates are permitted to use campaign money for private security and can even pay family members as long as they provide a "bona fide service" at a fair market value — and given the amount of hysterical right-wing propaganda, death threats, and harassment hurled at Rep. Bush and the other members of the so-called "Squad," it's easy to see how her security bill might be pretty high.

The State Department's abrupt decision to cut funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) — the primary source of humanitarian aid to Gaza's 2.3 million besieged people — in response to unverified Israeli accusations that 12 of the agency's 13,000 staffers participated in the horrific terror attacks of October 7 provoked sharp rebukes from Sen. Sanders and other progressives. "We cannot allow millions to suffer because of the actions of 12 people. The US and other countries must restore funding to stave off this humanitarian catastrophe," Sanders said in a statement. Rep. Rashida Tlaib told POLITICO that "to take concerning allegations as fact without any investigation, especially in light of the Israeli government’s well-documented history of using torture and obtaining forced confessions, as a means to suspend life-saving aid demonstrates the emptiness of the Biden administration’s claims to care about Palestinian lives." Their calls to resume funding were supported by at least 20 major humanitarian organizations, including Save the Children, ActionAid, and Oxfam.

Stop us if you've heard this one before, but the House GOP's obstinate refusal to even consider a bill that might improve President Biden's political standing is putting yet another major piece of legislation on life support. This time, it's a controversial border bill that Democrats have made major compromises on in order to secure critical weapons funding for Ukraine. But three months of negotiations are about to go down the drain thanks to Donald Trump and his subservient MAGA minions in the House, who are now trying to argue that actually Joe Biden has had the powers to "deal with the border" the entire time and why hasn't he done that already?! Negotiating with adult toddlers who exist on an alternative plane of reality and have no intention of ever acting in good faith is futile; only by retaking the House and holding the Senate in November can Democrats reasonably expect to pass any kind of meaningful legislation again.

At least 16 Gaza cemeteries have been bulldozed by the Israel Defense Forces since the war began in October. The IDF has claimed that terror group Hamas had built tunnels under every single one; its critics accuse the IDF of trying to destroy the Palestinian connection to the land and the symbols of their history. CNN’s Jeremy Diamond investigated the bulldozings, and was not impressed with the paltry evidence that the IDF gave him for their claims. "Israeli commanders failed to prove their claim during a three-hour visit to the Bani Suheila cemetery and the surrounding area," Diamond wrote. "More questions than answers." Given that half of all the buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed since the Hamas massacres on October 7 either through bombardment or controlled detonation, including 390 schools and universities, we should definitely be demanding some answers.
