Happy New Year, John!

 

Today, we are witnessing an explosion of interest in generative artificial intelligence in education as the technology becomes universally accessible. These advances offer the potential to free up educators’ time and allow them to focus more on teaching, expand professional development opportunities, help support students' individual needs, and much more. The key to harnessing this technology is three-fold. First, co-develop novel solutions alongside educators that help address the chronic challenges faced in their classrooms. Second, leverage and scale existing technology that uses quality research-based practices to help students learn best. Third, expand the range and quality of the data sets the systems are trained on to mitigate bias and improve the relevance and safety of tools based on generative AI.

 

We are thoughtfully exploring how to incorporate AI into products in partnership with researchers, experts, and educators. That is why we’re supporting convenings like the  AI K-12 Deeper Learning Summit hosted by the Anaheim Union High School District, Digital Promise, the University of California Irvine School of Education, and The AI Education Project to help increase understanding of AI in education. Together, I am hopeful that we can provide the right tools and support to help educators unlock the full potential of every student, no matter who they are or where they live.

CZI Education recently launched a report highlighting how we’ve worked with partners over the last eight years to support an education system that unlocks the full potential of every student, no matter who they are or where they live. The unprecedented look back on the Education team’s work shares exciting data about our impact, including how CZI has built tools that have reached more than 250,000 students in 46 states and Washington, D.C. We’ve also made more than 1,000 grants to over 420 organizations. Our grantees have developed tools and resources that are now reaching more than 5 million students.
