Building a Startup in a Tough Funding Environment
Successfully launching and scaling a new business venture has never been easy. When fundraising dries up and uncontrollables become more prevalent, the challenge is even greater. But founders increase their odds of success by proving product-market fit on a budget, conservatively fundraising, and focusing on culture and governance early on.

Why AI Can't Take Away Creative Jobs
One of the most pervasive fears about artificial intelligence is that it's out to take people's jobs. Generative AI has the ability to write, to create artwork, to make videos with very little human input. And workers are nervous about its possibilities. A CNBC SurveyMonkey Workforce Survey in December found that 60% of employees who regularly use AI fear its impact on their jobs. And last year, Goldman Sachs published a report that estimated 300 million jobs could be displaced by AI automation.

The 30-second spot, opening like a tourism ad, shows palm trees and coastlines. There are five-star hotels and children playing. People dance, eat, and laugh, while a voiceover encourages visitors to “experience a culture rich in tradition.” But it suddenly shifts, turning the face of a smiling man into a grimacing one. “This is what Gaza could have been like without Hamas,” the narrator says. A new series of images flashes, this time of fighters and weapons, and children wandering the streets or holding guns.

Inside the Music Industry's High-Stakes A.I. Experiments
Sir Lucian Grainge, the chairman and C.E.O. of Universal Music Group, the largest music company in the world, is curious, empathetic, and, if not exactly humble, a master of the humblebrag. His superpower is his humanity. A sixty-three-year-old Englishman, who was knighted in 2016 for his contributions to the music industry and has topped Billboard's Power 100 list of music-industry players several times in the past decade, Grainge is compact and a bit chubby, with alert eyes behind owlish glasses. He isn't trying to be noticed. He presides over a public company worth more than fifty billion dollars, but he could be a small-business owner who sells music in a London shop, as did his father, Cecil. On earnings calls, Grainge can sound more like a London taxi dispatcher than a chief executive. But woe to those who mistake his European civility for a lack of competitive fire. "He is so deceptive with that little kind face and those little glasses," Doug Morris, the previous chairman of UMG, told the Financial Times in 2003, when he was still Grainge's boss. "Behind them, he is actually a killer shark." In 2011, Grainge devoured Morris's job.

It was November 2016, and the fourth-generation California farmer had just completed a perfect pepper harvest—another high point for a business, Underwood Ranches, that had grown exponentially over three decades on the strength of a single crop. As the sole supplier of the juicy red jalapeños for sriracha, Huy Fong Foods’ iconic fiery-red chili-garlic sauce, Underwood’s empire of peppers had spread from a 400-acre family farm in the 1980s to 3,000 acres across two counties outside Los Angeles.
