Thursday, February 1st is the deadline to repay rent owed between October 1, 2021, and January 31, 2023. The City of Los Angeles is working to prevent renter households from losing their homes and is spreading the message ([link removed]) about resources available to help prevent Angelenos from self evicting.
“We must do all that we can to prevent people from falling into homelessness in the first place,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “February 1 is around the corner, and I want to make sure that tenants know that they have rights and can seek help from the City. Angelenos who are facing evictions because of rent owed from the COVID-19 pandemic should stay in their homes and contact the City for assistance.
Tenants cannot be evicted without cause because of actions taken by the City Council. All residential rental units in Los Angeles now officially have “just cause” protections, meaning a landlord cannot evict a tenant without declaring a legal reason for eviction. In non-RSO units, these protections take effect after six months or at the end of the first lease term, whichever comes first.

If you are unable to pay back your rent in full, my office is here to help! Here are some steps you can take to find support.
1. DON’T Self Evict:
Reach out for help. If you're facing an eviction, stay in your home and get in touch with the City right away.
2. Call the Los Angeles Housing Department Hotline at (866) 557-7368:
Call for assistance right away. Representatives can help determine what options are available to you.
3. Determine Type of Notice - When to Respond?
If you received a pay or quit notice, you are typically not required to file an answer but you should reach out to LAHD. For the eviction process to be initiated after a 3-day notice, you will still need to receive an Unlawful Detainer (UD) notice.
Get Help, Don’t Ignore It. You Must Respond within 5 days.
Visit selfhelp.courts.ca.gov/eviction-tenant/respond for help to submit your UD response.
4. Find resources and legal assistance:
Tenants cannot be evicted without a cause. Take any of the actions below to receive assistance.
